John Lymer

I am a Brighton-based mixed-media artist working across drawing, photography, found objects, collage, block printing, spray paint, and any material that feels appropriate in the moment. My practice is guided by intuition, with each mark, print, or intervention holding equal significance. I’m drawn to the way each layer reshapes what came before while influencing what follows, allowing unexpected textures, surfaces, and meanings to emerge.

Alongside my artistic practice, I spent over 30 years in secondary education as a Curriculum Leader of Art & Design, retiring in July 2025. Teaching was a significant part of my life and closely reflected my approach to making art: I encouraged experimentation, risk-taking, and an openness to discovery, with a strong emphasis on creativity as an evolving process rather than a fixed outcome.

I have exhibited my work across a range of venues, including Artists Open Houses, The Helm Gallery, Newhaven BN9 Art Space, Atelier, and several pop-up shows. More recently, I was invited to present a dual-site solo exhibition at The Vault and Mid Street Lab, which ran for a month.
